Knuckleball pitcher Phil Niekro has passed away

Baseball Hall of Famer Phil Niekro has passed away. He was 81.

An official cause of death has not been announced yet. However, according to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Niekro died in his sleep.

“Phil Niekro’s record on the field ranks him as one of the game’s finest pitchers,” Chairman of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum Jane Forbes Clark said. “As a mentor, leader and friend, Phil brought out the best in all of us in Cooperstown. Over more than a decade of serving as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Hall of Fame, his wisdom, his compassion, and his love for the game proved to be invaluable in helping us shape our decisions. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, I would like to send our heartfelt condolences to Nancy Niekro and the Niekro family.”

Niekro is the seventh baseball player, who is enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, to pass away in 2020. He began his professional baseball career with the Milwaukee Braves.

He followed the team when they relocated to Atlanta, Georgia to become the Atlanta Braves. He spent 21 seasons with the Braves organization.

He also played for the Cleveland Indians, Toronto Blue Jays, and the New York Yankees.

In his playing career, he was 318-274 in 864 games, including 716 starts. He also had 83 games finished, 245 complete games, 45 shutouts, and 29 saves.

He allowed 2,337 runs (2,012 earned runs), including 482 home runs, in 5,404 innings pitched. Niekro also struck out 3,342 and walked 1,809 batters.
