DeVonta Smith was the best wide receiver in the country this season. And on Tuesday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver was able to add a prestigious award.
Smith has received the delayed Heisman Trophy at the virtual presentation that took place at ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut. This was the first time that the award had been held virtually.
The event typically takes place on the second Saturday in December in New York City. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the award was held through Zoom for the most part.

“I would like to thank God,” Smith said. “Without him, none of this would be possible. I congratulate all the finalists. Just to be in this situation with you guys, y’all are great athletes, and just to be a part of something like this is truly a blessing.
“I want to thank my family, my mom, my dad, just everything that y’all taught me to mold me into the young man I am today. I want to thank my mentor Vincent Sanders. Without you, I wouldn’t be where I am today, just from the rise to taking me places that I want to visit, just to doing things and just helping me get to where I am.”
Smith received 447 first-place votes. He also received 221-second places and 73 third-place votes for a total of 1,856 points.
He is the first Alabama wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy. It’s been nearly 30 years since the last wide receiver received this prestigious award.
In 1991, former Michigan Wolverines wide receiver Desmond Howard received this honor.
The Amite City, Louisiana native is just the third Heisman Trophy winner at Alabama. He joins running backs Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry, who received their awards since 2009.
Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence finished second despite missing two games due to the coronavirus. Lawrence received 222 first-place votes.
In addition, he received 176 second-place votes and 169 third-place votes for 1,187 votes.
Smith’s teammate Mac Jones was the third-place finisher. The signal caller had 138 first-place votes.
Plus, he also had 248 second-place votes and 220 third-place votes. Jones totaled 1,130 votes with his tally.
Florida Gators quarterback Kyle Trask, who had one of the best seasons in Florida history, finished in fourth place. He received just 61 first-place votes.
Then, he received 164 second-place votes and 226 third-place votes. Trask — who had not started a game before the 2019 season when he was a freshman in high school in 2012 — had 737 votes.

“I want to thank Coach Saban for giving me the opportunity to come play at the University of Alabama. I thank Coach Wiggins, my receiver coach, just for helping me day in and day out, watching film, making me a better player. I thank my teammates. With team success comes individual success, so without y’all, I wouldn’t be where I am today, winning this award.
“And just to all the young kids out there that’s not the biggest, not the strongest, just keep pushing because I’m not the biggest. I’ve been doubted a lot just because of my size, and really it just comes down to you putting your mind to it, you can do it. No job is too big. If you put your mind to it, you can do it, and just keep believing in God, and you’ll get where you want to be.”
