Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano has announced his retirement. The 60-year-old spent the past two seasons leading the defense.
It’s not clear if this was a voluntary decision. Or instead of a decision to be fired, he elected to resign.
The announcement comes just two days after the Bears’ season ended. They were eliminated on Sunday in a 21-9 loss to the New Orleans Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Bears were likely to make coaching changes in the off-season on Matt Nagy’s staff. Now, with Pagano no longer on the staff, Nagy will have to make a decision on a new defensive coordinator in the future.
In what could be Pagano’s final season in the NFL, he guided the 14th best defense in the league. They allowed 370 points on the season.
The Bears averaged 23.1 points per game. Only one time this season did the Bears’ defensive unit hold a team to below 10 points on the season.
That’s when the Bears’ defense held the Houston Texans to just seven points in a 36-7 win on December 13th.
Chicago had seven games this season, where the defense allowed below 20 points. However, they were 5-2 in those games.
The defensive unit gave up a season-high 41 points against the Green Bay Packers. The 41-points came in a 41-25 loss to the Packers on Sunday Night Football on November 29th.

The former Indianapolis Colts head coach returned to coaching with the Bears in January 2019 after spending a season away from the NFL. He replaced Vic Fangio, who had been hired by the Denver Broncos as their head coach.
During his first season leading the Bears’ defense, they were the best in the NFC. The Bears’ defensive unit was the best part of the team for much of the early part of the season when the team struggled.
However, the unit struggled towards the end of the season. The Bears were barely able to get into the playoffs, as they got in on the final day of the regular season.
