By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired Urban Meyer as their new head coach. Meyer returns to coaching with this move. He spent the past two seasons away from the game. However, this will be his first job in the NFL. And his first opportunity to coach a team in the league. Before this hire, he had been a college football head coach with the Bowling Green Falcons, Utah Utes, Florida Gators, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Many college football coaches have not panned out in the NFL. Steve Spurrier was the last college head coach to transition to the league with no prior NFL experience. He was hired by the Washington Redskins. The former Gators head coach went 12-20 before being fired. While coaches have not worked out, Pete Carroll is a success story. There is a caveat in his case. Carroll was previously was an NFL head coach before accepting the USC Trojans head coach. After a successful stint in college football, he moved to the Seattle Seahawks head coach in 2010. He replaces Doug Marrone. The former head coach was fired at the end of the season. The Jaguars went 1-15 during the 2020 season with 15 straight losses. Meyer is the sixth head coach in the Jaguars’ 27-year history. He joins the likes of Tom Coughlin, Jack Del Rio, Mike Mularkey, Gus Bradley, and Marrone. As a college football head coach, he went 187-32. He also won three national championships, including two with the Gators in 2006 and 2008. He also won a national championship with the Buckeyes in 2014. Ohio State was the first team to win the College Football Playoff National Championship. One thing that may have enticed Meyer to make this move is that the Jaguars have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. They are expected to get a franchise player with that selection. Former Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence is projected to be the top pick in April’s NFL Draft. This is the first time in franchise history that the Jaguars have held the top pick.
