According to The Athletic, the Philadelphia Phillies have offered a five-year deal to free-agent catcher J.T. Realmuto. The deal is reportedly worth over $100 million.
This is reportedly worth nearly the same amount as their offer to Realmuto last March. He wanted to receive a higher offer.
The free-agent market has been quiet this off-season. It does not appear that there are many teams interested in the free agent.
Besides the Phillies, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Washington Nationals are rumored to be the other two teams interested in his services. With very little interest, Realmuto may have to accept an offer lower than expected.
If he agrees to this deal, it’ll be a huge raise for Realmuto. He was paid $10 million during the 2020 season.
“We continue to have interest in J.T.,” Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski said to The Athletic. “But from a negotiating standpoint, these are things that have to be kept private.”
He has appeared in 192 games during his tenure in Philadelphia. Realmuto appeared in 145 games during his first season with the Phillies.
Then, he appeared in 47 games during the MLB-shortened 60-game schedule.
The 29-year-old Del City, Oklahoma native has spent his entire career in the National League. On February 7, 2019, the Phillies acquired him from the Miami Marlins for Jorge Alfaro, Sixto Sánchez, prospect Will Stewart, and international bonus slot money.
Realmuto had a .266 batting average, 11 home runs, and 32 RBIs in 47 games. He also had six doubles and scored 33 runs on 46 hits.
The two-time All-Star has a career .278 batting average with 95 home runs and 358 RBIs in 732 games in seven MLB seasons. He also has 156 doubles and 19 triples, scoring 380 runs, on 749 hits.
