According to the Associated Press, a section of the Navajo Nation has been shut down to “persistent drag racing.” The road has been shut down through the end of February in Farmington, New Mexico.
The 2.5-mile section of the road on Navajo Route 4178 was closed on Monday. The Bureau of Indian Affairs Division of Transportation put concrete barriers on the road.
Also, signs were put up signaling the road has been shut down.
NAPI CEO Dave Zeller was quoted in the story saying that drag racing has been a problem on the road for several years.
“We are very concerned about the safety of our employees and everyone else who travel the roads through NAPI,” Zeller said.
NAPI Security Manager Genevia Cundiff said that there have been no accidents or deaths due to drag racing on the road. However, they were not willing to risk anybody getting hurt in the future with this decision.
“NAPI employees traveling from field to field utilize these roadways and collisions could occur,” Cundiff said. “In some instances, the employees have received threats by racers when interferes with their races.”
Anybody seeing drag racing at this location despite the shut down is asked to contact the Navajo Police Department. Navajo Police Department spokeswoman Christina Tsosie said that the authorities have beefed up their presence in the area.
