Texans’ Deshaun Watson requests trade

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has requested a trade. The news came after the team hired David Culley as their new head coach on Wednesday night.

While it appears that the trade came after Culley’s hiring, Watson reportedly asked for the trade last week, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The 25-year-old is going to be the top quarterback, who will be available this off-season. Watson is sick of the organization.

Something had to happen to cause this decision from the franchise quarterback to move on. At this time, it’s not clear what that might have been.

We do know that Watson was not pleased with the Texans’ trade of DeAndre Hopkins. There had to be additional issues that occurred to Watson to ask for his departure.

In March, former Texans head coach and GM Bill O’Brien traded Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals in a blockbuster deal. He also was not consulted in the team’s decision to hire Nick Caserio as their GM.

The New York Jets have been mentioned as the top target for Watson. However, it’s going to be tough to move on if the Texans do not want to play all.

Houston can fine Watson $95,877 for missing mini camp. Also, he will also be fined $50,000 per day for each day of training camp that he does not participate in.

The Gainesville, Georgia native completed his fourth season with the Texans in 2020. He went 4-12 as a starter.

In his short career, he has made 54 appearances, including 53 starts. He is 28-25 with the Texans in the regular season.

He has gone 1,186 of 1,748 for 14,539 yards. He has thrown 104 passing yards and 36 interceptions.
