According to The Athletic, the Las Vegas Raiders prefer to trade Marcus Mariota over Derek Carr. The story says that the New England Patriots may be linked to Mariota.

The Patriots will be one of the teams in the market for a quarterback. They had a disastrous season with Cam Newton as their starter.

Last off-season, Newton signed a one-year deal with the Patriots. However, he went 7-8 as a starter.

Newton went 242 of 368 for 2,657 yards. He also had eight touchdown passes and 10 interceptions.

At least 10 NFL teams are looking for a quarterback this off-season. Mariota may get another opportunity to be a starter in the league once again.

He was previously a starter with the Tennessee Titans.

There is some belief that Mariota may be able to rebound his career as Ryan Tannehill did with the Titans. Tannehill took the starting job from Mariota during the 2019 season.

This past season, Mariota played in one game with the Raiders. He went 17 of 28 for 226 yards in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15.

He threw one touchdown pass and one interception.

Also, he had 88 rushing yards in the game. He scored a rushing touchdown as well.

The problem with Mariota is that he has struggled to stay healthy (examples: here, here, here). If they can get something for him, GM Mike Mayock would likely take it.

But the Raiders do have another option if they cannot find a taker. However, with at least 10 teams looking for a quarterback, the odds are that someone may take a chance on Mariota once again.

He is scheduled to make $10.6 million next season. While the Raiders could trade him, they may have an incentive to release him.

See, if they cut ties with the backup, it’ll save the team $10.725 million with a pre-June 1st, 2021 release or trade.

In his career, Mariota has gone 29-32 as a starter in 61 games. He has made 64 appearances overall.

He has gone 1,127 of 1,793 for 13,433 passing yards. He has thrown 77 touchdown passes and had 45 interceptions.

Also, he has carried the football 251 times for 1,487 yards. He has scored 12 rushing touchdowns.
