The UCF Knights have announced Gus Malzahn as their new head football coach. He replaces Josh Heupel.

In January, Heupel became the Tennessee Volunteers head coach just days after Danny White became athletic director. White was previously at UCF before Tennessee.

Malzahn returns to coaching after being fired two months ago. He was fired on December 13th by the Auburn Tigers.

“When I started the search process, it became very evident very quickly that, based on the conversations I had with the players last week and what they told me were looking for, Gus Malzahn was the guy for the job,” UCF Athletic Director Terry Mohajir. “He has won at every level, and he has coached a Heisman Trophy winner and NFL draft picks. There has never been a better time for Coach Malzahn to lead this program than right now.”

As a head coach, Malzahn has a 77-38 record with the Arkansas State Red Wolves and the Tigers. In his first season at Auburn, he guided the team to the BCS National Championship game during the 2013 season.

This was the final BCS National Championship game before the College Football Playoff began with the 2014 season. The Florida State Seminoles won 34-31 over the Tigers.

The Knights went 6-4 in 2020. That’s the same record that Malzahn guided the Tigers to in his final season before his departure.

UCF lost their Bowl game in the Boca Raton Bowl. They were defeated 49-23 by the BYU Cougars on December 22, 2020.

“I’m thrilled to be the head coach at UCF, and I’m truly looking forward to being part of Knight Nation,” Malzahn said. “It’s exciting to be head of a program where the future is extremely bright. I will be hitting the ground running in terms of getting to know our team and everyone else connected with UCF. Our goal is to be ready to win championships.”
