RallyCar legend Hannu Mikkola has passed away

Former race car driver Hannu Mikkola has passed away. He was 78.

An official cause of death has not been announced yet.

“Really sad to hear the news about Hannu Mikkola,” Petter Solberg said in a Facebook post. “He was a legend, a proper gentleman, a real Champion, and a great father to great kids. Sending all my condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace.”

Mikkola is one of the best rally car drivers in the history of the sport. He is a former Finnish World Champion RallyCar driver.

Also, he is a seven-time winner of the 100 Lakes Rally in Finland. Plus, he is a four-time winner of the RAC Rally.

He drove for several teams in his career that included Ford, Toyota, Audi, Mazda, and Subaru. Mikkola has also worked with Arne Hertz, Bruno Berglund, Johnny Johansson, Christian Geistdörfer, Seppo Harjanne, Atso Aho, and Jim Porter.

The talented driver competed in the sport from 1973 through 1993. He won his lone Championship in 1983.

He won 18 races in his career.

“We are saddened by the passing of Hannu Mikkola – an icon of the WRC and a special driver in Toyota’s rally history,” Toyota Gazoo Racing WRC said in a Facebook post. “We send our condolences to his family and will drive on with him in our thoughts this weekend.”
