Former NFL player Louis Nix found dead in a pond

Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish defensive lineman Louis Nix III has passed away. His family has confirmed his death.

An official cause of death has not been announced yet. On Saturday, his vehicle was found in a pond.

According to Action News in Jacksonville, Nix had been missing since Wednesday. Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly said on Twitter that Nix was last seen on Tuesday when he left his father’s house in Jacksonville, Florida.

Recently in December, Nix was shot in a robbery attempt at a gas station in Jacksonville. Nix — who was born in Jacksonville — played for the Fighting Irish from 2010 through 2013.

He was a third-round draft pick by the Houston Texans in the 2014 NFL Draft. He played two seasons in the NFL.

Besides playing for the Texans, he also played for the New York Giants.

“I want nobody to be in my shoes,” Stephanie Wingfield, his mother, said to Action News Jacksonville. “I’m not saying something has happened to my son, prayerfully, I hope it has not, but just not knowing, you know, your kids are your kids.”
