Arizona Cardinals have signed free-agent defensive end J.J. Watt. The 31-year-old has agreed to a two-year contract.
He will receive $31 million. However, only $23 million of the $31 million is guaranteed.
Watt reportedly chose the Cardinals over the Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s a reasonable deal for Watt, who may have had a deal worth $15-16 million per season.

By signing with the Cardinals, he will be used on the same unit as Chandler Jones. Teams will now have to deal with both Chandler and Watt, who are in the Top 2 of the sack list since the 2012 season (combined 192.5 sacks).
Last season, according to NextGenStats, Watt was double-teamed at the highest rate in the league at 30%. Watt’s signing could mean the departure for Hassan Reddick, who had 13.0 sacks this past season.
Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph will be aggressive next season with Chandler and Watt coming at the quarterback. The unit will hope to improve on their 22.9 points allowed last season.

Before coming to the Cardinals, Watt was one of the most feared defensive ends with the Houston Texans. After a decade, he asked for and received his release.
Also, with this move, Watt is reunited with former teammate DeAndre Hopkins, who was acquired by the Cardinals during the 2020 off-season. Hopkins was acquired in one of the worst NFL trades by the Texans.
