An official cause of death has not been announced yet.
“It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we inform you that our dad Tommy Johnson Sr. Passed away this morning,” a Facebook post said on the Tommy Johnson Sr. Facebook page. “The severity of his stroke was too much to overcome. Although he didn’t win this battle, he fought hard and astonished all of us, including his doctors by giving us the past twelve days with him.
“Please respect our privacy as we process and mourn in the next few days. We will update with funeral arrangements as they are finalized.”
He is the father of former Don Schumacher Racing Funny Car pilot Tommy Johnson Jr. and the former Wendy Johnson. Wendy Childers — which is his daughter’s married name — was the youngest woman to win a Wally at the age of 17 when she won at the 1992 Sears-Craftsman Nationals in Super Comp.
Childers is employed as the Dale Earnhardt Jr. Foundation project manager. She is married to Penske Racing fabricator Mike Childers.
He is survived by his wife Sarah and children Tommy Johnson Jr. (Amy) and Wendy Childers (Mike). He had two grandchildren in Gage and Zane Childers.
There was a book previously on him called “CANCER: The True Story of How I Survived Absolute Terminal Cancer.” He was the owner of Advanced Wireless Technology.
