Matsuyama makes history, as first Japan male golfer to win The Masters

A Japanese golfer won a Green Jacket for the first time. Hideki Matsuyama won the prestigious Masters Tournament on Sunday at the Augusta National Golf Course in Augusta, Georgia.

This is the first time that a Japanese male golfer won a major championship. He is also the first Asian-born golfer to win this event.

Matsuyama had a final score of 278 with a -10 under par to win the event. He won the $2.07 million grand prize.

“It’s thrilling to think that there are a lot of youngsters in Japan watching today,” he said through an interpreter. “Hopefully in five, 10 years, when they get a little older, some of them will be competing on the world stage. … Hopefully I’ll be a pioneer, and many other Japanese will follow. I’m glad to be able to open the floodgates.”

With Matsuyama’s win, he is the first non-American to win his prestigious event since 2017 when Sergio Garcia won. Three straight American golfers had received a Green Jacket.

American Will Zalatoris finished second as he was one shot behind. He had a -9 under par with a final score of 279.

Xander Schauffele and former Masters Champion Jordan Spieth were tied for third. Both men had a -7 under par with a 281 score.
