The LSU Tigers have hit a home run. No, not on the baseball diamond.
The school has done so with its latest coaching addition. The Tigers Athletic Department has announced that Hall of Fame coach Kim Mulkey has been hired as their new women’s basketball coach.

Mulkey, a proven winner, replaces Nikki Fargas, who had been their head coach since the 2011-12 season. Fargas went 176-126 as the Tigers head coach.

During her tenure as head coach, Fargas guided her teams to back-to-back NCAA Sweet Sixteen during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.
However, this last season, the team went just 9-13. Their last winning record came during the 2019-20 season when she guided the team to a 20-10 record.
Fargas reportedly stepped down to become the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces President.
This is a homecoming of sorts for Mulkey, who grew up in Tickfaw, Louisiana. She also attended Hammond High School, where, as a player, she guided the team to four straight state championships.
The 58-year-old spent 21 seasons leading the Baylor Bears women’s basketball team. Mulkey was 631-104 with the Bears, including guiding her teams to three Championship seasons.

“Kim Mulkey is a champion and a Hall of Famer, and we are thrilled to welcome her home,” Tigers Athletic Director Scott Woodward said in a statement. “Her accomplishments are unprecedented, her passion is unrivaled, and her commitment to winning in all aspects of life — in the classroom, on the court, and in the community — is unparalleled. We look forward to working with her as she instills that championship culture at LSU.”
During her tenure as the Bears head coach, Mulkey never had a losing season. In her final season in Waco, Texas, she guided her team to a 27-3 record.
Mulkey, who played for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs from 1980 through 1984, began her coaching career at her alma mater. She worked for the Lady Techsters from 1985 through 2000.
She guided her teams to the NCAA Division I Championships in 2005, 2012, and 2019. She guided the Bears to the Final Four in 2005, 2010, 2012, and 2019.
