DHL Funny Car pilot J.R. Todd claimed the final No. 1 qualifier at the Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals on Saturday at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia. The track is shutting down after this event.
The Indiana native went 3.982 at 325.69 mph to claim the top spot in his Kalitta Motorsports Toyota Camry. The pass secured his first No. 1 qualifier since the 2019 season.
“It shows that (crew chiefs) Todd Smith, Jon (Oberhofer) and the team have their act together. It benefitted us being the last pair,” Todd said. “Todd made some tuneup changes to slow the car down and it put up a good number. This place has always been tricky and it’s nice to be starting from No. 1. We’ll see what the conditions bring (on Sunday), but it could be a good points day for us.”
Ford Motorcraft and Quick Lane sponsored pilot Bob Tasca III is the No. 2 qualifier. The Rhode Island native went 3.999 at 320.81 mph.
Mopar sponsored Matt Hagan was the No. 3 qualifier. The Virginia native went 4.001 at 314.02 mph.
