UAB shuts out FCS’ Jacksonville State in 2021 season opener

The UAB Blazers defeated the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Wednesday night. The Blazers won 31-0 over the Gamecocks at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama.

With the win, the Blazers improved to 1-0 on the season. The FCS Gamecocks fell to 0-1.

Blazers quarterback Tyler Johnston III went 17 of 21 for 320 yards. He had two touchdown passes.

Jermaine Brown Jr. had 14 carries for 78 yards and one touchdown. Trea Shropshire had five receptions for 128 yards and one touchdown.

Gamecocks quarterback Zerrick Cooper went 18 of 35 for 91 yards.

Cooper led the team with six carries for 28 yards. Pat Jackson had four receptions for three yards.

The Blazers scored 21 points in the second half. Johnston hit Gerrit Prince for a 23-yard touchdown reception.

Brown Jr. also scored on a 10-yard rushing touchdown. Dylan Hopkins hit Shropshire for a 42-yard touchdown reception.

UAB led 10-0 at halftime. Johnston III hit Rajae’ Johnson-Sanders for a three-yard touchdown reception.

Matthew Quinn also made a field goal.
