According to a report, the Carolina Panthers are re-engaging the Cleveland Browns in trade talks. The two sides are discussing a potential deal involving Baker Mayfield.

The former No. 1 overall pick is a lame duck right now. He has been exiled by the Browns.

And there has been little-to-no interest in his services by the other teams around the league. The Panthers previously expressed interest back around April’s NFL Draft.

However, the two sides were not able to come to an agreement. It was due to Mayfield’s upcoming $18 million salary for the 2022 season.

The Browns moved on with Deshaun Watson. He was acquired in a massive deal; including signing a fully guaranteed contract.

Watson is expected to miss part or all of the upcoming season due to his sexual assault cases against him. The Browns knew this was possible going in before the deal.

Two separate District Attorneys in Texas have failed to pursue charges against Watson. Yet, at least 24 women are suing him.

The league has also not completed their investigation into the matter. Watson missed the entire 2021 season due to the allegations against him despite being paid by the Houston Texans.

If the two sides can work out an agreement, Mayfield will be one of four quarterbacks on the Panthers roster. And he will compete with Sam Darnold for the starting job.

Matt Corral was drafted by the team in the NFL Draft. Phillip Walker and Devin Cheek may be on the roster bubble at the end of camp if this deal is made.

The Panthers have to do something as their quarterback position was lackluster last season. Darnold — who was acquired in the 2021 offseason in a trade with the New York Jets — struggled when he was on the field.

He also lost his starting job to an injury. The team eventually brought in former star Cam Newton on a one-year deal.

Initially, it looked like he was going to take the team in the right direction. But over time, he struggled too and eventually lost the job to Darnold late in the season.

Mayfield has been the Browns’ starter since the 2018 season. Everything was going good until last season when things began to unravel.

The Browns front office decided to look for a new quarterback in the offseason. They questioned Mayfield’s maturity, too.

Now, Mayfield’s stop on exile island may be coming to a close if this works out.
