Sterling retains UFC belt with win over former champ Dillashaw

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher UFC Bantamweight Champion Aljamain Sterling retained his UFC Bantamweight Championship on Saturday. He defeated former champion T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 280 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Sterling knocked out Dillashaw with a TKO (punches) in the second round. This was the only knockout on the main card of the pay-per-view. The fight came to a stop in the second round at 3:44. The 33-year-old New York native improved to 22-3 in his MMA career. This was just his third knockout in his career. Outside of knocking out Dillashaw, Sterling also knocked out Hugo Viana by TKO (punches) at UFC Fight Night: Cowboy vs. Miller on July 16th, 2014 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He also knocked out Evan Chmielski by TKO (punches) at CFFC 10: Black Eye on July 23rd, 2011, in Atlantic City as well in his Featherweight debut. He has won eight straight bouts. He has not lost since December 9th, 2017 in a KO (knee) to Marlon Moraes. Sterling is now 2-0 in UFC Bantamweight Championship defenses. Dillashaw has dropped two of his last three bouts. He fell to 17-5 in his career following the loss. Both of his last two losses were by TKO (punches). Henry Cejudo also defeated Dillashaw by the same decision at UFC Fight Night: Cejudo vs. Dillashaw on January 19th, 2019 in Brooklyn, New York. Three of his losses have come by knockout. He was first knocked out by John Dodson by TKO (punches) at The Ultimate Fighter: Team Bisping vs. Team Miller Finale on December 3rd, 2011. He also has two split-decision losses on his record. Those came to Dominik Cruz and Raphael Assunção.
