Josef Martinez signs with Inter Miami CF following Atlanta United release

Inter Miami CF has signed free agent striker Josef Martinez. He quickly signed with the Miami, Florida team after his departure from Atlanta United on Tuesday.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Martinez had been linked to Inter Miami CF since the tale end of last season.

“Josef is a champion and adding him to our group is exciting for us as we head into the 2023 season. He’s been one of the best players in the league since he first arrived and we believe he’ll make a difference here at Inter Miami,” Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson said. “We’re adding a proven goalscorer with a track record of success in MLS. We’re thrilled to have a player like Josef in our attack.”

The 29-year-old hopes to improve a team that went 14-6-14 last season. Inter Miami CF was eliminated early in the postseason.

Last season with Atlanta United, he appeared in 26 matches. He started 12 of those contests.

He had a team-high nine goals. Martinez also had four assists in 1,465 minutes.

In his MLS career that dates back to the 2017 season, Martinez appeared in 134 matches. He made 111 starts.

Martinez scored 98 goals. He also assisted on 13 goals in 10,158 minutes.

Inter Miami CF hopes that Martinez can take the place of Gonzalo Higuain, who announced his retirement at the end of the season. Higuain led Inter Miami CF with 16 goals during the regular season.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to represent Inter Miami and give the best of myself,” Martinez said after signing with the team. “This is a club with high aspirations and that aims to be amongst the best in the league. I hope to help the team achieve its objectives and leave my mark at the club.”
