Chris Tabor will serve as the Carolina Panthers interim head coach for the rest of the season. The Panthers fired head coach Frank Reich.

Reich — who was part of the inaugural Panthers team — was fired in his first season as their head coach.

This will be Tabor’s first official head coaching opportunity. Before receiving this promotion, he was the Panthers special teams coordinator.

With Tabor in charge now, it is unclear if he will make any coaching changes. Or keep the same staff in place.

Sometimes, when a head coach is fired and an interim head coach takes over, some other coaches are fired, as well. We have not heard yet if that will be the case in this scenario, as well.

Before coming to the Panthers, he was with the Chicago Bears as their special teams coordinator from 2018 through 2021. During the 2021 season when Bears head coach Matt Nagy was unable to coach his team due to a positive COVID-19 test, he served as an interim head coach.

The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Bears 33-22 in his coaching debut as an interim head coach.

He also worked for the Cleveland Browns as their special teams coordinator from 2011 through 2017.

He also was the Bears assistant special teams coach from 2008 through 2010. Before coming to the Bears, he worked at the high school and college level.

Tabor was previously with the Utah State Aggies and Missouri Tigers as an assistant coach. He spent one season as the Culver-Stockton Wildcats head coach in 2001, going 6-5.

The St. Joseph, Missouri native also was the Central Methodist Eagles offensive coordinator in 1995 and 1996. He also coached at Hutchinson Community College and Benton High School in Missouri.
