The Milwaukee Bucks have hired Doc Rivers as their new head coach. He replaces Adrian Griffin, who was recently fired by the team.

Rivers had been out of basketball after being fired by the Philadelphia 76ers. He is the 18th head coach in Bucks history.

Former Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doc Rivers points against the Boston Celtics during the first quarter in game six of the Eastern Conference Semifinals in the 2023 NBA Playoffs

The 62-year-old is taking over a Bucks team that has gone 30-13 under Griffin. It is believed that the front office began to change their minds as they went from an inexperienced head coach to a veteran head coach.

Rivers has 24 seasons under his belt as a head coach. He has 1,097 regular-season wins, which is ninth all-time. He also has 111 playoff wins, which is fourth all-time.

Before coming to the Bucks, he served as a head coach with the Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, and the 76ers. He guided the Celtics to the NBA Championship in 2008.

“I’m thrilled to be back in Milwaukee,” Rivers said in a statement. “This city holds a special place in my heart from my days at Marquette. I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead such a talented group and to be part of a first-class organization. I can’t wait to get started.”

The Bucks want to win right now. Their roster features a two-time MVP in Giannis Antetokounmpo. It also features former All-Star Damian Lillard and a supporting cast.

“This team is loaded with talent,” Rivers said. “My job is to help us play to our strengths, stay connected, and be at our best when it matters most. I’m looking forward to building relationships with Giannis, Dame, and the rest of the guys. Together, we can achieve something special.”

His first game with the team is expected to be on Monday, January 29th. That’s when the Bucks play the Denver Nuggets in Denver, Colorado.
