The second round of the 2024 Masters at Augusta National Golf Club unfolded with high drama, brilliant performances, and historic milestones. By the end of Friday, three players—Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, and Max Homa—shared the lead at 6-under-par, setting the stage for an electrifying weekend. Here’s a detailed look at how the day unfolded.

The Leaders: A Three-Way Tie

Scottie Scheffler (-6)

Scottie Scheffler, the 2022 Masters champion, displayed his trademark steadiness during Friday’s gusty conditions. Starting the day tied for second, Scheffler carded an even-par 72 in Round 2. While his score wasn’t flashy, it was enough to keep him atop the leaderboard.

Scheffler’s round was marked by three birdies, including a crucial one on the par-4 2nd hole that tied him with DeChambeau early in the day. However, bogeys on holes 7 and 11 slowed his momentum. Reflecting on his performance, Scheffler said, “It was a grind out there today. The wind made it tough to commit to shots, but I’m happy with how I stayed patient.”

Bryson DeChambeau (-6)

Bryson DeChambeau started Round 2 as the solo leader but faltered slightly with a 1-over 73. Known for his aggressive style and powerful drives, DeChambeau had moments of brilliance, including a birdie on the par-3 12th hole that briefly regained him sole possession of the lead. However, bogeys on holes 10 and 18 proved costly.

DeChambeau’s highlight came when he moved a directional sign obstructing his line of play on the par-5 13th—a moment that showcased his unconventional approach to problem-solving on the course. “I’m always looking for ways to optimize my game,” DeChambeau explained. “Augusta challenges you to think outside the box.”

Max Homa (-6)

Max Homa continued his impressive Masters debut by shooting a solid 1-under 71 in Round 2. Homa’s consistency shone through as he ranked first in greens in regulation among all players. Birdies on holes 2 and 15 kept him firmly in contention.

Homa shared his excitement about being tied for the lead: “It’s surreal to be here at Augusta and playing this well. I’ve worked hard on my game, and it feels great to see it come together at such a special place.”

Other Contenders

Nicolai Højgaard (-4)

The Danish rookie Nicolai Højgaard dropped from third to fourth after shooting a 1-over 73. Despite seven bogeys over two rounds, Højgaard’s ability to score birdies (11 total) kept him within striking distance of the leaders.

Collin Morikawa (-3)

Collin Morikawa climbed into a tie for fifth place after posting a strong second-round score of 70 (-2). His precision with irons helped him avoid trouble and capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Historic Moments

  • Tiger Woods Makes History: Tiger Woods set a record by making his 24th consecutive cut at the Masters after shooting an even-par 72 in Round 2. Woods expressed gratitude for his longevity: “Making history here is always special. Augusta has been like a second home to me.”
  • Patrick Cantlay’s Rare Feat: Cantlay achieved two eagles on par-4s during Round 2—an extraordinary accomplishment last seen in the Masters by Brandt Jobe in 2006.

Missed Cut Heartbreaks

The cut line came at +6 (150), eliminating several big names:

  • Jordan Spieth (+7)
  • Dustin Johnson (+7)
  • Viktor Hovland (+7)
  • Justin Thomas (+8), who played his last four holes in seven-over-par.

Final Thoughts

With three players tied atop the leaderboard and several others within striking distance, Saturday promises intense competition at Augusta National. The contrasting styles of Scheffler’s steadiness, DeChambeau’s power, and Homa’s precision make this year’s Masters one of the most unpredictable in recent memory.
