Early Momentum

Scheffler started strong with birdies on holes 2 and 3, quickly building confidence. His precise iron play on the par-4 3rd set up a short birdie putt, which he calmly sank. “Getting off to a good start is crucial here,” Scheffler said. “It sets the tone for the rest of the round”.

Trouble on the Back Nine

The par-4 10th hole proved difficult as Scheffler hit his approach shot into the greenside bunker, leading to a double bogey. He followed this with a bogey on the par-4 11th after missing a crucial par putt. These setbacks momentarily dropped him from the top spot. “Augusta doesn’t let you relax,” he admitted. “You have to stay focused, even when things don’t go your way”.

Turning Point: The Eagle at 13

Scheffler’s defining moment came at the par-5 13th hole, where he sank a spectacular 31-foot eagle putt. This shot not only regained his momentum but also re-established him as the leader.

“That eagle was huge,” Scheffler said with a smile. “It gave me the energy I needed to finish strong.”

Closing with Confidence

Scheffler capped off his round with a birdie on the par-4 18th hole, hitting an accurate approach shot to within eight feet of the pin and converting the putt. This brought his score to 7-under for the tournament, securing his position at the top of the leaderboard. Reflecting on his round, Scheffler commented, “I’m proud of how I fought back today. Augusta tests every part of your game.”

Scheffler’s ability to rebound from adversity and capitalize on scoring opportunities highlighted why he remains one of golf’s most formidable competitors. His performance set the stage for an exciting final round at Augusta National.
