The San Jose Sharks will have the top pick in this year’s NHL Draft. They won the NHL Draft Lottery on Tuesday night.
The Sharks will have several weeks before they have to make their selection in June. This will be their first No. 1 overall pick in team history.
The team finished eighth in the Pacific Division last season. They were 19-54-9 overall.
This is their first Top 3 pick since 1998. That’s when the team drafted Brad Stuart with the third overall selection.
While this is their first No. 1 overall pick, the Sharks have held the No. 2 overall pick three times. The last time was in 1997 when they drafted Patrick Marleau.
The team also drafted Andrei Zyuzin with the second overall pick in rhe 1996 NHL Draft. In 1991, the team used the No. 2 overall pick on Pat Falloon.
The Sharks are hoping to draft a franchise cornerstone with the No. 1 overall pick. The team is hoping that the top pick could eventually, over time, lead their team back to prominence.
