Courage defeats Spirit by 1-0 on Sanchez’s goal

The Washington Spirit suffered its first loss in nearly two months. The Spirit were defeated 1-0 by the North Carolina Courage at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.

This was the first meeting between these two teams this season. They do not play again until the final regular season game on November 1st.

With the win, the Courage improved to 7-1-7 on the season. The Spirit fell to 10-1-4.

According to Aiscore.com, the Courage has dominated the series with the Spirit. They have won 16 of the 25 meetings.

The Spirit have won five of the games. And there have been four draws.

In fact, in their last two meetings, the Courage have won by a 1-0 score.  

It is the Spirit’s first loss of the season since they were defeated by the Portland Thorns on May 4th. The Thorns won 2-1 in the away game. 

It is their second loss at home this season. They were also defeated 3-2 by the Orlando Pride on April 26th.

The Courage’s goal came early in the contest. Ashley Sanchez scored in the 19th minute. 

Each team had a yellow card in the game. Courage player Meredith Speck picked up a yellow card in the 75th minute. 

Then, in the 80th minute, Spirit player Hal Hershfelt received a yellow card. 

Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury made four out of five saves.
Courage goalkeeper Casey Murphy made four saves.
