The veteran coach had been serving as a defensive analyst on his son’s team since 2020.

“Monte Kiffin, 84, peacefully passed away today in Oxford surrounded by family and friends,” Ole Miss Football said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “As his grandson Knox said, he’s free of pain and smiling down on us from above.

“Please keep the Kiffin family in your thoughts and prayers during this time.”

He is the architect of the Tampa 2 defense. He is also inducted into the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Ring of Honor.

Kiffin was also part of the team as defensive coordinator that defeated the Oakland Raiders to win Super Bowl XXXVII.

Outside of the Buccaneers, Kiffin also coached the Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Dallas Cowboys, and the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL. He was the Defensive Coordinator with the Saints, Buccaneers, and Cowboys.

Kiffin worked for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Arkansas Razorbacks, North Carolina State Wolfpack, Tennessee Volunteers, USC Trojans, and Florida Atlantic Owls. He was the NC State head coach from 1980 through 1982.

“Monte Kiffin was a beloved and iconic member of the Buccaneers family, and our entire organization mourns his loss today,” the Glazer family, who owns the Buccaneers, said in a statement. “As a coach, Monte was a true innovator who got the best out of his players and helped create one of the signature defenses of the early 2000s. His passionate and energetic leadership style resonated with all his players, and he was instrumental in our first Super Bowl win and the success of Hall of Famers such as Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, and Rondé Barber.

“Off the field, Monte was kind, genuine, gracious, and always had a positive attitude. He was very special to the Buccaneers organization and our family. We send our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Robin, sons, Lane and Chris, daughter, Heidi, and the entire Kiffin family.”
