Spirit wins 2-1 over Chivas de Guadalajara in 2024 Summer Cup

Chester, PA — The Washington Spirit kicked off the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup with a win. They defeated Chivas de Guadalajara 2-1 on Sunday at Subaru Park.

At press time, the Spirit leads Group D with three points. So far, Guadalajara does not have a point.

This tournament goes from July 19th through October 25th. There are 20 teams from the two organizations competing in this event.

The Spirit has two more games in the Group stage. They face Gotham FC next Sunday at Subaru Park. 

Then, on July 31st, the Spirit faces the Chicago Red Stars at City Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. 

During the NWSL regular season, the Spirit defeated the Gotham FC twice this season. They won 2-0 at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey on June 23rd.

Earlier this year, the Spirit also won 2-0 against Gotham FC on April 20th in Washington, D.C.

The Spirit has already defeated the Red Stars during the NWSL season. They won 4-2 on May 1st at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois.

The Spirit and Red Stars play again in the NWSL season one more time. They will play on October 20th in Washington, D.C.

The Spirit got on the board first against their Mexican counterparts. Paige Metayer scored in the 13th minute on a header from a corner kick.

Lena Silano also scored in the 47th minute. 

Guadalajara scored late in the contest. Alicia Cervantes scored in the 68th minute.
