No-hitters are hard to come by. For the San Diego Padres, the franchise had just their second no-hitter on Thursday.

Padres pitcher Dylan Cease no-hit the Washington Nationals from Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. He threw 114 pitches in the game.

Cease got Idemaro Vargas and Jacob Young to ground out in the ninth inning. He then got C.J. Abrams to fly out on a slider.

“My thought was I’m going to throw a slider and I’m going to get it down, and if it’s down he’s either hopefully going to beat it into the ground or he can’t put in play,” Cease said. “I didn’t like it off the bat. It looked very hitterish, but fortunately, fate’s on my side today.”

Cease previously had a no-hit attempt two years ago. However, he lost that no-hit bid to his now-teammate Luis Arráez.

The 114 pitches were a career-high for him. He got a late start to the game, as there was an hour and 16-minute rain delay.

Normally, when there are rain delays, it throws pitches off of their pattern. Thus, you will see starters skip the rain delay starts.

Both no-hitter pitchers are on the current Padres roster. On April 9th, 2021, Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove pitched the first no-hitter in team history against the Texas Rangers.

This is the second no-hitter on the season. Houston Astros pitcher Ronel Blanco no-hit the Toronto Blue Jays on April 1st.

Cease is in his first season with the Padres. He was acquired by the team on March 13th in a deal that sent four players — Steven Wilson, Drew Thorpe, Jairo Iriarte, and Samuel Zavala — to the Chicago White Sox.

On September 3rd, 2022, he was close to a no-hitter. He was one out away when he pitched for the Chicago White Sox.

He gave up the hit to Luis Arráez on a single on a ball that was in the strike zone.

“I’ve been close and to finally get it done, it’s one of those things that feels so remarkable and hard to believe,” Cease said. “To be able to do it and go out and experience it, I really don’t even know how to feel. Just happy.”

Cease is now 10-8 on the season. In his past three starts, he has given up just two hits in 22 innings.

He last gave up a significant amount of hits on July 2nd when he allowed eight hits in 3 1/3rd innings against the Rangers. Cease also allowed five hits over seven innings to the Arizona Diamondback on July 7th.
