The Minnesota Vikings suffered devastating news on Wednesday. Their rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy will now miss the entire 2024 season.
Their fan base will have to wait and see their potential franchise quarterback to play in 2025. They had a small glimpse of his potential during their first preseason game.
He looked very good in their 24-23 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. McCarthy went 11 of 17 for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

According to reports, he had a full repair to his torn meniscus in his knee. As a result of this news, the Vikings have to go to a backup plan.
“It was a successful procedure, but it did reveal that a repair was necessary which will end J.J.’s 2024 season,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters. “As crushed as I am for our team and the excitement that we had in our building and our fanbase felt the same way, especially after seeing him perform really well the other day at U.S. Bank Stadium, I’m the most crushed for J.J. But, as our fans either have already come to find out or will in the future, this guy is so motivated and so dialed in.
“As excited as I was to draft him, he’s confirmed everything that I hoped to see not only early on through training camp, through his performance last Saturday, but our fanbase and everyone should just be excited about the fact that we’ve got our young franchise quarterback, I believe, in the building.”
McCarthy was expected to compete with veteran Sam Darnold, who signed a one-year deal with the team in March, for the starting job. Many pundits believed that McCarthy would win the job and start early in the season.
Now, barring a significant move, Darnold will be their quarterback No. 1 moving forward.
Darnold barely played last season with the San Francisco 49ers as the backup to Brock Purdy. According to Football Reference, Darnold made 10 appearances but just one start for the team.

The former first-round pick went 28 of 46 for 297 yards in the Bay Area. He had two touchdown passes and one interception.
The bulk of his playing time came in the season-finale loss to the Los Angeles Rams when he went 16 of 26 for 189 yards. He had one touchdown pass in the 21-20 loss.
Darnold has a 21-35 record as an NFL starter with the New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, and the 49ers. His best record as a starter was 7-6 with the Jets during the 2019 season.
Since the 2020 season, though, Darnold is 10-20 as a starter. He has gone 570 of 956 for 6,175 yards.
He has also had 27 touchdown passes and 28 interceptions.
