Sharks acquire Cody Ceci, draft pick from Oilers

The San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Cody Ceci and a 2025 third-round draft pick from the Edmonton Oilers. In exchange, the Oilers received Ty Emberson.

This was a cost-cutting move by the Oilers. Ceci will make $3.25 million next season.

The Oilers are trying to match the offer sheets by the St. Louis Blues to Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Broberg received a two-year offer sheet from the Blues worth $4.58 million per season.

Holloway received a two-year offer sheet worth $2.29 million per season. The Oilers have until this Tuesday to match the offer sheets. 

The 30-year-old Ceci was a first-round draft pick in the 2012 NHL Draft. He has played for four teams in his 11 seasons in the league.

If he plays for the Sharks, it’ll be his fifth team. However, this is just his second United States-based team. He previously spent the 2020-21 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Ceci spent the last three seasons with the Oilers. He appeared in 237 games with the team.

He scored 11 goals. He scored five goals during the 2021-22 and 2023-24 seasons.

Ceci had just one goal during the 2022-23 season.

He also had 68 points in his three seasons with the Oilers.

In his 11 seasons, he has appeared in 786 games. He has scored 48 goals and had 211 points.

Emberson will make $950,000 this upcoming season. He was a third-round draft pick during the 2018 NHL Draft.

During the 2023-24 season, Emberson appeared in 30 games. He scored one goal and had 10 points.
