The biggest fear of any race car driver is fire. And on Saturday night, Lyle Barnett experienced fire once again.
According to a social media post by Scott Tidwell Racing, Barnett was involved in an incident in Alabama International Dragway.
“Lyle Barnett Racing did have an incident at Alabama International Dragway involving fire and he is out and okay,” Tidwell said in the post.
Barnett responded a short time later saying “I’m 100% okay, the car not so much.”
We do not have much information on the incident at this time. However, it came during the Drag Coverage Night of Fire event.
According to the Burn and Reconstructive Centers of America, Barnett was previously on fire for 28 seconds. He was going 170 mph when his car exploded.
He was competing at Lights Out 6 at South Georgia Motorsports Park in 2015 when the incident happened. Due to the heat from his fire, his safety equipment was no match for the fire.
Barnett was eventually able to get out of his car at the Lights Out event and taken to a burn unit hospital in the Georgia area.
The story said that the burns were to 15% of his body.
“There were times there that they thought I wasn’t going to make it, especially when they found the inhalation damage to my lungs,” Barnett said. “For seven days, it was touch and go, you know: Is he gonna make it? Is he not gonna make it? Is he gonna be on a vent for the rest of his life? What’s going to happen?”
