The Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday night. The Mustangs won 29-24 over the Wolf Pack at Mackay Stadium in Reno, Nevada.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 1-0 on the season. Head coach Rhett Lashlee is now 3-0 in season-openers.
Nevada fell to 0-1. This was their first game under new head coach Jeff Choate.
The broadcasters said that SMU escaped with the win. Late in the contest, SMU scored with 1:23 left after Preston Stone hit RJ Maryland for a touchdown.
Nevada got the ball back and it came down to a 4th and 10-play. Nevada threw the ball to a wide receiver; however, as he landed, his foot was out of bounce.
Mustangs quarterback Preston Stone went 18 of 31 for 257 yards. He had one touchdown and one interception.
Brashard Smith had 12 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown. RJ Maryland had eight receptions for 163 yards and a touchdown.
Wolf Pack quarterback Brendon Lewis went 14 of 26 for 132 yards. He had two touchdown passes.
Lewis also had 18 carries for 77 rushing yards. Cortez Braham Jr. had four receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown.
SMU outscored Nevada 19-7 in the second half. Smith scored on a four-yard rushing touchdown. Following the touchdown, LJ Johnson Jr. converted a two-point conversion.
Savion Red was tackled by Anthony Booker Jr. in the end zone for a safety. Stone hit Maryland for a 34-yard touchdown reception.
Collin Rogers also made a 43-yard field goal.
Nevada’s lone second-half points came in the third quarter. Red scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown.
Nevada led 17-10 at halftime. They led 7-0 after the first quarter.
Lewis hit Jace Henry for a five-yard touchdown reception. Lewis also hit Braham Jr. for a 10-yard touchdown reception.
Matthew Killam made a 36-yard field goal.
Johnson Jr. put the Mustangs on the board with a one-yard rushing touchdown. Collin Rogers also made a 52-yard field goal.
