The Liberty Flames held on to remain perfect. The Flames defeated the Florida International University Panthers, 31-24, in overtime on Tuesday night at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg, Virginia.
With the win, the Flames are now 5-0. They are 3-0 within the Conference USA.
The Panthers fell to 2-4 overall. They are 1-1 in conference play.
Liberty also remained perfect against the Panthers, as they improved to 3-0 on the season. Last year, in Miami, Florida, the Flames won 38-6.
In their first meeting in 2020, the Flames won 36-34 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Flames quarterback Kaidon Salter went 9 of 16 for 125 yards.
Quinton Cooley had 29 carries for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Reese Smith had four receptions for 68 yards.
Panthers quarterback Keyone Jenkins went 19 of 29 for 245 yards. He had one interception.
Kejon Owens had 15 carries for 52 yards and a touchdown. Eric Rivers had five receptions for 95 yards.
Salter scored on a nine-yard rushing touchdown in overtime.
In the second half, FIU outscored Liberty 14-7. All three touchdowns came in the fourth quarter.
Owens scored on a three-yard rushing touchdown. Jenkins also scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown.
Flames’ Cooley scored on a nine-yard rushing touchdown.
Liberty led 17-10 at halftime. Salter scored on a 20-yard rushing touchdown. Cooley also scored on a four-yard rushing touchdown.
Colin Karhu made a 28-yard field goal.
Panthers’ Dean Patterson scored on a 0-yardage rushing touchdown. Alejandro Prado also made a 31-yard field goal.
