Hilltoppers remain undefeated vs. UTEP with blowout win

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers defeated the UTEP Miners on Thursday night. The Hilltoppers won 44-17 over the Miners at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

The Hilltoppers improved to 4-2 on the season. They are 2-0 in conference play.

The Miners fell to 0-6 on the season. The team also is 0-for-3 in the conference.

These two teams have played in back-to-back years. The Hilltoppers won 43-21 last year.

In 2018, Western Kentucky won 40-16 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. One year earlier, the Hilltoppers escaped with a one-point win in a 15-14 win.

Their first meeting came in 2014 in Kentucky when the Hilltoppers won 35-27.

Hilltoppers quarterback Caden Veltkamp went 18 of 27 for 264 yards. He had three touchdown passes and one interception.

Elijah Young had 16 carries for 60 yards. Easton Messer had six receptions for 106 yards.

Miners quarterback Cade McConnell went 3 of 7 for 96 yards. He had one touchdown pass and one interception.

Ezell Jolly had 27 carries for 119 yards. Kenny Odom had one reception for 76 yards and a touchdown.

The Hilltoppers outscored the Miners 17-10 in the second half. Veltkamp hit Michael Mathison for a 14-yard touchdown reception.

Veltkamp also hit Mathison for a three-yard touchdown reception. Lucas Carneiro also made a 54-yard field goal.

Miners’ Corey Wren scored on a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Buzz Fiabiano also made a 42-yard field goal.

Western Kentucky led 27-7 at halftime. Veltkamp hit Dalvin Smith for a 30-yard touchdown reception. Mathison also scored on a 12-yard rushing touchdown.

Veltkamp scored on a two-yard rushing touchdown. Carneiro made a 25-yard field goal. He also made a 42-yard field goal.

Miners’ McConnell hit Odom for a 76-yard touchdown reception.
