East Carolina Pirates have named defensive coordinator Blake Harrell as their interim head coach. He replaces Mike Houston, who was fired on Sunday.
Harrell takes over a program as the head boss that fell to 3-4 on Saturday. The Pirates were defeated on the road by the No. 23 Army Black Knights 45-28 in New York.
This is Harrell’s first opportunity to be a head coach in college football. He will attempt to make the Pirates Bowl eligible in their final five games.

To become bowl-eligible, the Pirates need to win three more games. Depending on how many teams are bowl-eligible, each team may or may not play in a bowl game.
Their next three opponents each have a 2-5 record and are 6-15 overall.
Harrell will coach his first game as interim head coach on Saturday against the Temple Owls. Following that 2-5 opponent, they face the Florida Atlantic Owls.
After the game with the FAU Owls, they conclude the stretch with 2-5 opponents in the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
