The Boston Celtics lived in the past for a night. And their future saw the team win like they were last on the court.

The Celtics defeated the New York Knicks on the NBA’s season-opening night on Tuesday. The Celtics won 132-109 over the Knicks at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

In June, the Celtics won an NBA-leading 18th NBA championship. The Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks.

Jayson Tatum — who signed a five-year, $314 million contract extension with the team in July — led the team with 37 points. He also had four rebounds, 10 assists, one steal, and one block.

All five of the Celtics starters were able to score double figures. The 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown contributed 23 points.

Boston had 19 bench points. Sam Hauser led the bench with 10 points.

The new-look Knicks were led by two players, who scored 22 points apiece. Jalen Brunson — who re-signed with the team but for far less money — had 22 points.

Miles McBride also had 22 points.

Four of the five Knicks players scored in double digits. OG Anunoby was the only starter, who did not surpass 10 points, as he scored just four points.

Two of those four starters are new to the team this season. Karl-Anthony Towns — who was just acquired by the team in late September — had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Mikal Bridges — who was acquired in July in another big deal — had 16 points.

New York had 43 bench points. McBride led the bench with the aforementioned 22 points.
