The New Orleans Pelicans will be without starting point guard Dejounte Murray for an extended period of time. ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Carania has confirmed the news that Murray has a fracture in his hand.

Carania reported initially that Murray was injured in the Pelicans season-opening win against the Chicago Bulls. At press time, there was no timeframe for his return.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a broken hand, which is a fracture in your hand, is at least a month’s recovery time. It could take upwards of two months for his hand to heal.

Carania did not suggest that Murray needs surgery. If he does need surgery, it would mean that his recovery time will be longer. He will have his hand immobilized for it to heal correctly.

This is a tough blow for the Pelicans, who saw Murray play in his first game with the team. He played in 29 minutes before being hurt.

We do not have information on how he may have been injured in the game. Yet, he scored 14 points, while having eight rebounds and 10 assists against the Bulls.

He was the Pelicans’ third-leading scorer in the contest, as Brandon Ingram led the team with 33 points.

With Murray sidelined, Jose Alvarado is expected to get the start against the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday. Alvarado played 12 minutes against the Bulls despite being listed as questionable for the game as he deals with a right knee contusion.
