University of South Florida Bulls men’s basketball head coach Amir Abdul-Rahim has passed away. He was 43.
An official cause of death has not been announced yet. According to TMZ Sports, his death was caused by a medical procedure that “went horribly wrong.”

We do not know what type of medical procedure he had. Or when the operation was.

“All of us with South Florida Athletics are grieving with the loved ones of Coach Abdur-Rahim,” Vice President for Athletics Michael Kelly said. “He was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation. Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the University, and the community. We are supporting those closest to him, including his family, team, and athletics staff, to ensure they have the resources they need to deal with this tremendous loss.”
The school has not said who will be the interim head coach. That decision will be made in the days ahead.
The most logical choice would be Ben Fletcher, who is their Associate Head Coach. Fletcher has not been a head coach at any time in his coaching career.
Abdul-Ram was set to begin his second season before his death. The Bulls begin their season in November.
He went 25-8 during his first season. The Bulls made the postseason.
They were invited to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) before being eliminated in the second round.

His influence on our student-athletes, coaching staff and the university community will live on forever.”
Overall, Abdul-Rahim has gone 70-82 as a men’s basketball head coach. Before arriving at South Florida, he was the Kennesaw State Owls head coach from 2019 through 2023.
The 2024 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year has been a college coach since the 2006-07 season. He was an assistant coach at Murray State, College of Charleston, Texas A&M, and Georgia.
