When a college football team has two players playing at a high level and being mentioned for the prestigious Heisman Trophy award, one typically falls off at some point. Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders is experiencing that right now.

Early in the season, it was Sanders and Travis Hunter being mentioned. Now, it is just Hunter, the special two-way player being mentioned.

“It’s a lot,” Sanders said after making the Buffaloes Bowl eligible on Saturday. “It’s a lot of feelings that go into that, but I feel like if it’s out of us, you got to think. They’re not going to give two players on the same team. You get what I’m saying? Me and Travis. Just deal with it.

“It’s not going to happen like that, you know? So, it is what it is. I don’t really look too deep into that. I just want Travis to win, of course, and that would be almost like I won because I threw him the ball.”

The betting odds are against the Buffaloes for this to happen this season. Sanders was not even in the Heisman Trophy odds Top 10 before Saturday’s games.

Oklahoma was the last team to have two Heisman Trophy candidates. It was quarterback Baker Mayfield and wide receiver Dede Westbrook.

That was during the 2016 Heisman Trophy ceremony. Louisville Cardinals quarterback Lamar Jackson won the award that season.

Mayfield finished third while Dede Westbrook finished fourth.

According to For the Win (www.ftw.usatoday.com), Hunter had the fourth-best betting odds before Saturday’s game. Hunter returned to the Buffaloes on Saturday after missing time with a shoulder injury.

The injury may have hurt his chances.

Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel had the third-best betting odds. Miami (Florida) quarterback Cam Ward has the second-best betting odds.

Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty has the best betting odds. Jeanty is hoping to become the first running back in nearly a decade to win the award as a running back.

Then-Alabama running back Derrick Henry won the award in 2015. Jeanty has more rushing yards than the previous 3 Heisman Trophy running backs through games so far.
