Cornell Tools sponsored Funny Car Austin Prock won the Ford Performance NHRA Nationals on Monday. He defeated McLead and FTI sponsored driver Paul Lee in the final round at the dragstrip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Prock went 3.830 at 327.33 mph, according to John Force Racing. The NHRA and dragracecentral.com said that Prock had no speed.
Lee went 3.982 at 297.94 mph.
“It was a long weekend, an odd weekend, for sure, but a great weekend to have John (Force) back,” Prock said. “We heard he was coming this weekend, and all you want to do is put a smile on his face, make a good team effort, and we did exactly that. All three of our John Force Racing race cars were on fire this weekend. I won three races before I ever got in this car this year, and now I’ve got eight in one season. It’s pretty crazy.
“The job’s not finished until the [championship] trophy is in our hands and when it gets to my hands, it’s going straight to my dad’s hands, but we’re getting really close, so I’m excited that we won today. We still haven’t won the championship and that’s our main goal this year. When I got in the race car at the beginning of the year, my dad said he wanted to win a world championship and this team has just been lights out this year, outstanding job by each and every one of them.”
The championship is going to come down to Prock or this teammate Jack Beckman in Pomona. Either way, it is going to be John Force Racing’s 21st Funny Car Championship.
Prock has 2,662 points, which is the most of the class. Beckman is 188 points behind with 2,474 points.
With the win, this was a double up for John Force Racing. Brittany Force also won in her Top Fuel Dragster.
Before this final round, Prock held a 2-0 advantage against Lee. Plus, Prock was 1-0 in the previous final round appearance— which came this year.
Prock had the starting line advantage. He then went straight down the track.
He won by 0.1768 seconds over Lee. Prock won by approximately 77 feet.
Lee was making a good pass until about the 700-foot mark. That’s when he began to experience problems, as he had an engine flash before coasting to the finish line.
The talented Prock now has eight Funny Car wins on the season in Robert Hight’s Funny Car. He now has 12 Wally’s overall.
