Duke beats Maine in season-opener as sensation Cooper Flagg scores 18

The No. 7 Duke Blue Devils defeated the Maine Black Bears on Monday night. The Blue Devils won 96-62 over the Black Bears at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, North Carolina. 

With the win, the Blue Devils improved to 1-0. The Black Bears fell to 0-1.

This was the college debut of Cooper Flagg. He is expected to be the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. 

Flagg — who was impressive during workouts with the USA Basketball team this season — had 18 points in 30 minutes. He also had seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. 

Fellow freshman Kon Knueppel led the Blue Devils with 22 points in 32 minutes. He had four rebounds, two assists, and one steal. 

The Blue Devils had four players score in double figures. Khaman Maluach was the lone starter, who did not break the 10-point mark, as he had six points in 17 minutes. 

The Blue Devils had 29 bench points and had 44 points in the pain. They also scored 19 points off of turnovers and had 14 second-chance points. 

The team also scored 18 fast-break points. Sion James led the reserves with 11 points. 

Quion Burns led the Black Bears with 15 points. He also had five rebounds and three steals. 

Maine had just two players, who scored in double digits. Keelan Steele also had 11 points. Steele had one point a minute, as he scored his 11 points in 11 minutes. 

The Black Bears had 15 bench points. The team had 30 points in the paint and 19 points off of turnovers. 

The team had 11 second-chance points and nine fast-break points. Christopher Mantis led the bench with eight points.
