According to WAPT-TV, Mississippi Valley State football player Ryan Quinney has passed away.
An official cause of death has not been determined yet. However, he was killed in a car accident.
“We are heartbroken to share that our beloved student, Ryan Quinney, tragically lost his life in a car accident last night,” Mississippi Valley State University said in a Facebook post. “Ryan was a bright light in our community with a spirit that lifted everyone around him. He will be deeply missed by his friends, faculty, and all who knew him.
“During this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ryan’s family and loved ones. Please keep them, along with his friends and classmates, in your thoughts and prayers. Let us remember Ryan’s impact on our lives and honor his memory by supporting each other through this loss. Rest in peace, Ryan.”
WAPT is reporting that Quinney’s vehicle was involved in a police chase with the Mississippi Highway Patrol on Friday night. Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers said, according to the TV station, that the police chase started in Flora.
It then entered into Yazoo City when the driver of the vehicle lost control. The car crashed on Jerry Clower Boulevard north of 20th Street.
The car, according to Shivers via WAPT, left the roadway and went into a ditch before striking a parked car. After hitting the parked car, the vehicle became airborne, hit a light pole and flipped several times.
The vehicle eventually ended up on Talbert Drive, Shivers said. Quinney was pronounced dead at the scene.
Medical personnel had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the driver, who was airlifted to a nearby hospital at University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Quinney’s death came hours before the Mississippi Valley State’s game against Jackson State University.
