Ball State names Colin Johnson as interim head coach

The Ball State Cardinals have replaced one alumnus with another as the interim head coach of their football program. The school fired Mike Neu on Saturday morning.

Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell has named offensive line coach Colin Johnson as interim head coach. He will lead the team in their final two games of the season.

This will be Johnson’s first opportunity to be a head coach. His first game in charge will be on Saturday, November 23rd, in a home contest against the Bowling Green State Falcons at Scheumann Stadium at 2 pm local time.

The team will conclude their season on the road. Their final game will be on Black Friday against the Ohio Bobcats at noon local time in Athens, Ohio.

Johnson — who played for the school from 1999 through 2002 — has been a coach at the school since 2019. He was their offensive line coach and run game coordinator through this season.

Now, he has been promoted to the head man of the program.

Before returning to his alma mater, Johnson was the offensive line coach with the Butler Bulldogs in 2018. He was the DePauw Tigers offensive line coach from 2013 through 2017.

He had one season as the offensive line coach with the Wooster Fighting Scots in 2012. He served his first stint with Butler in 2011 as their defensive line coach.

He began his coaching career with the Indiana Hoosiers, where he served as a graduate assistant and offensive quality control coach from 2008 through 2010.
