For the second consecutive night, the combat sports world was expecting fireworks. But instead, they got two duds.

Jake Paul defeated the very old Mike Tyson in a lackluster fight. Then, one day later, UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones defeated Stipe Miocic in another boring fight.

Jones won via a third-round knockout in the UFC 309 main event at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The bout came to an end following a spinning back kick to the rib cage area.

“He’s really, really good,” Jones said in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. “He’s really tough, he’s really durable. I was hitting him with some pretty decent shots, but man, he just kept coming forward.

I know a lot of guys have fought against Steve here before, and we all have that in common. It was like fighting against the Terminator. Very, very discouraging to hit somebody that’s not reacting to it. But that body shot, man, no matter how tough you are, deliver(ed to) the liver.”

Following the fight, Miocic said that this was his final fight. Instead, of putting his gloves in the ring, which is tradition when a fighter retires, he kept them on as he walked out of the Octagon.

Jones was dominant in the fight. He had a takedown in the first round that cut Miocic open.

After the second round, Jones decided to put an end to the bout one round later. Following his win, he decided to celebrate with the President-elect Donald Trump dance.

“Everyone knows that Stipe Miocic isn’t the biggest heavyweight, but he always comes lean, and he always comes in great cardio shape,” Jones said. “I’ve watched him have wars with Daniel Cormier and a lot of guys where they just rock him, sock him.

“He doesn’t react much to getting punched in the face. So our plan was to try to attack the body a little bit more. I was hoping to get him out in the first round, but he hung in there.”

Jones is now 28-1-1 in his career. This was his first fight in 18 months as he last fought on March 4th, 2023, when he defeated Ciryl Gane by guillotine choke submission at UFC 285 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Miocic concludes his career with a 20-5 mark. This was his first fight in over three years as the Ohio firefighter last fought at UFC 260 when he lost to Francis Ngannou by KO (punches) on March 27th, 2021.

“I’m hanging him up,” Miocic said in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. “I’m retiring. Thank God.

“Sucked ass, I lost. I knew he was really tough, I knew he was going to be good, he was doing the best of all time. I expected everything, I just didn’t do what I was supposed to do. And like, the way I related to him, he did what he was supposed to when he won. Hats off to him, man.”
