Lunsford was the Owls’ tight ends and special teams coordinator, according to their website, before the promotion. Now, he’ll run the entire program once again – at least for the final two games of the season.

He is 28-21 as a college football head coach. Lunsford was named interim head coach during the 2017 season with the Georgia Southern Eagles.

He went 2-4 as the interim head coach. The Georgia Southern Athletic Department decided to name him the permanent head coach before the 2018 season after his interim title was removed.

In his first full season, he guided the Eagles to a 10-3 record. They also won the Camellia Bowl in Alabama.

In 2019, he guided the team to another winning record, going 7-6. Georgia Southern lost in the Cure Bowl in Florida.
