The UMass Minutemen have fired head football coach Don Brown. He led the program for the last three seasons.
The Minutemen are 2-8 this season. They are currently on a two-game losing streak. An interim head coach will be named to cover the rest of the season.
“I am extremely grateful to Coach Brown for returning to UMass three years ago to help us build back a program he once coached to a national title game,” Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford said. “Don should have immense pride in the outstanding contributions he has made to advance Massachusetts Football during his three stops in Amherst. Upon his return in 2021, we shared a common goal to help UMass football attain conference membership, something that was realized last spring.

“Largely due to his renowned coaching reputation, Don legitimized our FBS program and Massachusetts football has taken positive steps forward since his return. We are structurally positioned to accomplish our competitive goals as we move into a new league and a new college athletics landscape in 2025.”
In his second stint, Brown went 6-28 over three seasons. However, if you include his first stint from 2004 through 2008, he’s 49-47.
During his first stint with the Minutemen, Brown had a winning record all five seasons. He had a 6-5 mark during the 2004 season.
Then, in 2005, he went 7-4. One year later, he guided the team to a 13-2 mark and guided the team to the Division I Championship game before losing to the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
In 2007, Brown guided the Minutemen to a 10-3 mark. The team lost in the quarterfinal of the Division I playoffs. Finally, he guided the team to a 7-5 mark.

The Minutemen Athletic Department thought that he would have the same success as before at the FBS level. But that did not happen.
Overall, as a head coach, Brown is 101-73 that also included stops with the Northeastern Huskies (27-20), and the Plymouth State Panthers (25-6).
