The UMass Minutemen have promoted offensive coordinator Shane Montgomery to interim head coach. Montgomery will coach the team in their final two games of the season.

Montgomery had been the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach before the promotion to interim head coach. He was in his first season at the school.

The 57-year-old will guide the Minutemen on Saturday in a mega clash with the Top 10 ranked Georgia Bulldogs. His team will be at a disadvantage, yet they still have to play the game in Athens, Georgia.

Then, Montgomery will guide the team in their season-finale at home against the UCONN Huskies on Saturday, November 30th.

After the season, the Minutemen will do a national search for a head coach. However, due to their recent woeful records, this job may not garner a lot of interest from top-level candidates.

Montgomery does have previous head coaching experience. He was previously the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks head coach from 2005 through 2008.

With the RedHawks in 2005, Montgomery guided his team to a 7-4 record. Then, one year later, the team went 2-10.

In 2007, the RedHawks rebounded with a 6-7 mark. And in his final season as the team’s bench leader, the RedHawks went 2-10 in 2008.

After being a head coach, Montgomery has bounced around in the college football ranks. He had served as offensive coordinator for numerous schools since his last head coaching stint.

He served as offensive coordinator with the Akron Zips, Youngstown State Penguins, Charlotte 49ers, James Madison Dukes, and Buffalo Bulls, before the Minutemen.
