Colorado Buffaloes head football coach Deion Sanders is not happy with the Jim Thorpe Award Committee. Buffaloes star wide receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter was not among the three finalists.

The finalists for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award are Georgia Bulldogs safety Malaki Starks, Ohio State Buckeyes safety Caleb Downs, and Texas Longhorns cornerback Jahdae Barron.

“I’m gonna address something that just transpired and they brought to my attention today, that Travis (Hunter) is a finalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year, Maxwell Player of the Year, Bednarik Defensive Player of the Year, Biletnikoff Award Best Receiver, regardless of position, and was snubbed by the Thorpe. How? How is Travis Hunter snubbed by the Jim Thorpe Award? You could have my award, you could have it back. As a matter of fact, I’m gonna give him mine.

“I ain’t using it, it’s just sitting up there collecting dust. So Travis could have my Thorpe Award because if this ain’t the most idiotic thing in college football, that he’s not a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award and he is, I would say arguably, but I don’t think it’s really an argument about this young man being the best defensive back in college football.”

This award has been given out to the top defensive back in college football since 1986.

Two previous Buffaloes have won the award. Chris Hudson was the last player to achieve this award two decades ago in 1994.

Deon Figures was the first to achieve this award in 1992.

Sanders — who has been leading the Buffaloes for the last two seasons was the third person to win this award. He was the 1988 winner of the award.

Hunter — the best two-way player since Charles Woodson with the Michigan Wolverines in 1997 — has had 20 solo tackles. He has had 31 tackles overall.

The shutdown corner also has one tackle for a loss. He also has three interceptions, one forced fumble, and nine pass deflections when he is not playing on offense.

Starks has had 35 solo tackles. He has had 55 combined tackles and four tackles for a loss.

He also had one interception and two pass deflections.
