On the same day that his former head coach Jake Dickert was hired by the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, former Washington State quarterback John Mateer has landed with the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Sooners had an opening after then-quarterback Jackson Arnold decided to enter the transfer portal. He eventually landed on his feet with the Auburn Tigers.

Mateer has also signed an agreement with 1Oklahoma, the NIL collective with the Sooners.

The sophomore quarterback had 3,965 total yards. He had 3,139 passing yards and 826 rushing yards.

He also had 44 total touchdowns.

As he moved to Oklahoma, Mateer followed his former offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to Norman, Oklahoma. Arbuckle was named the Sooners offensive coordinator on December 2nd.

The 29-year-old Arbuckle was the Cougars offensive coordinator for two seasons before being hired by Oklahoma.

Mateer will compete for the Sooners starting job in 2025. He should be considered the front runner as he knows what to expect in Arbuckle’s offense.

Behind Arnold, Michael Hawkins Jr., Luke Elzinga, Taylor Tatum, Bauer Sharp, and Brenen Thompson attempted a pass in 2024. Hawkins Jr. led the pack with 536 passing yards.

Elzinga had 38 passing yards and Tatum had 16. Sharp and Thompson did not complete their pass attempts.

With the transfer portal being the Wild Wild West, things can change and these players may not be who is competing with Mateer for the starting job in 2025.
